Description

CONVENT OF SANTO TOMÁS AND HOSTERÍA DEL ESTUDIANTE

Parador de Alcala de Hernares This newly opened hotel is located in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, only 26 km from the capital city and 20 km away from Barajas International Airport and IFEMA. It has 128 guestrooms.

Parador de Alcalá de Henares is housed in a magnificent seventeenth-century building, the former Santo Tomás Dominican Convent and School. It is one of the city’s landmarks along with Hostería del Estudiante, in the former Minor School of San Jerónimo, founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1510 and overlooking the beautiful Patio Trilingüe at the University of Alcalá de Henares.

These monuments form a complex that was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Around the cloisters at the Santo Tomás School-Convent there are the restaurant, the bar, the breakfast room, the guests’ lounge, the night bar, and the spa. There is also restaurant in Hostería del Estudiante, which serves a wide range of courses, including Cervantine food and the well-known traditional “costradas”.

The Parador has a swimming pool, which is open only in the summer. In addition, the hotel boasts twelve rooms available for conferences, meetings, and other events. They cover nearly 1,000 square metres. Some of them even have a separate reception area. The Parador also offers parking for 124 vehicles. All in all, it is a wise combination of tradition and avant-garde, creating a space where you can relax or hold successful business meetings in a comfortable place living up to the high quality standards of Paradores.

Gastronomy and what to do

RESTAURANT/BARS:

What to eat...

At the Parador and the Hostería of Alcalá, you may enjoy the typical gastronomy of the “Siglo de Oro” – the Spanish Golden Century. It is a traditional gastronomy, yet updated, following the techniques and the taste of our time, but without forgetting in many of its dishes the essence of the cuisine of the time of the writer Cervantes. It is powerful, strong cuisine, with many variations on its compositions, differentiating on one hand the large prairies of “La Mancha”, where the taste of the peasants prevails since many centuries. Roast and fish are two of the references, complementing dishes like the “migas ilustradas”, the soup “sopa boba", “Duelos y Quebrantos”, the stew of Camachos`s wedding, vegetables, salads and stews, the traditional “cocido madrileño”, combining the cuisine with the know-how of the fireplace.

Not to forget, the sweet desserts based on almonds and honey, like the “pestiños”, the “flores”, the marzipan, the “piononos”, our “Costrada of Alcalá” and the burned almonds (almendras garrapiñadas)…all together within an unique surrounding: the old Colleges of Saint Thomas of Aquino, the Convent of the Dominicans of the 17th century and the College of San Jerónimo, a school of classic languages founded by the Cardinal Cisneros back in 1510.
