FARO

Faro has lots to offer : plenty of museums and churches, an attractive harbour, shops, nightlife and great beaches. It’s Old Town (Cidade Velha) is very attractive with its cobbled streets and colourful buildings accessed by the Arco da Vila. It’s main street Largo da Sé is lined with orange trees and next to Sé Cathedral and former Bishop’s Palace. Sé Cathedral was originally built in 1251 but was badly damaged in the Earthquake of 1755.  It has a mix of Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque features with pretty 18th century azulejos (glazed ceramic tiles). From it’s tower there are fantastic views across the walled town and coastline. Close-by inside the 16th century Convento de Nosa Senhora da Assunção famous for its old cloister is the Museu Arqueológico which is the oldest museum in the Algarve. It has exhibits which reflect the origins and history of Faro from roman, moorish and modern times.

Faro’s harbour is really vibrant with gardens and outdoor cafes facing the yachts moored there. There’s a nice walk following the railway along the seafront passing another small arch which leads to the Old Town with the town walls on one side and the mud flats and sea on the other. The Centre for Living Space ( Centro Ciência Viva ) is worth visiting with its interactive exhibits and permanent displays about the influence of the sun. Head for all the bars, restaurants and shops in Rua de Santo António. At its eastern end is Museu Regional all about local crafts and industries and also has inside a traditional Algarve house and tavern. A 5 minute walk away is Faro’s most beautiful church Igreja de São Pedro which dates back to the 16th century. Just beyond is the most creepy sight in Faro inside the twin-towered, Baroque Igreja do Carmo is the Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones!) which has alot of monk skulls decorated on the walls !!

Faro’s beaches are a major attraction the nearest being at Praia de Faro. Further west towards Quinta do Lago the beaches are quieter. The coast here is full of exclusive holiday and sporting complexes and the area referred to as Sportugal ! Faro is really well located not only close to the airport, it’s easy to explore the rest of Algarve (west or east) even as far as Spain.
