FELANITX

A Serene Town in Southeast Mallorca

Felanitx is a charming town located in the southeastern part of Mallorca, blending rich history, local culture, and natural beauty. About 50 kilometers from Palma, this town is at the heart of Mallorca´s second-largest wine region

The town´s history dates back to the Bronze Age, and throughout the centuries, the town has evolved to become known for its pottery, wine, and brandy production. By the 18th century, it had grown into a major hub for distilleries, with over 60 in operation by 1749. The town´s name, "Felanitx," comes from the Latin “Fenalicius,” referencing haymaking, which reflects its agricultural significance. The town´s elevated position also made it a key strategic location in ancient times.

Today, Felanitx is widely recognized for its caper cultivation, a staple in Mallorcan cuisine. It is also home to a growing wine industry, which has undergone a remarkable revival since the devastating Phylloxera epidemic wiped out many of Mallorca´s vineyards in the late 19th century. Now, Felanitx has a very important wine culture, producing a wide variety of wines that attract wine lovers from all over the world!

Felanitx´s Wine Scene: A Legacy Reborn

Felanitx is one of the most important wine-producing areas in Mallorca, located in the Pla & Llevent region. This region is celebrated for its distinctive wines, where the combination of Mediterranean climate, soil quality, and local grape varieties results in exceptional flavors. The area is home to several award-winning vineyards that have put Felanitx on the map for wine enthusiasts.

  • Wine Varieties: Felanitx is primarily known for its production of red wines, with local varieties like Manto Negro and Callet gaining recognition for their complex, full-bodied flavors. These wines are made with the region´s unique terroir, which gives them different characteristics that make them stand out. In addition to reds, the region also produces high-quality white wines, typically made from varieties such as Chardonnay, Viognier, and Premsal Blanc.
  • The Revival of Mallorcan Wine: After the Phylloxera blight of the 1890s, which devastated many vineyards across Mallorca, Felanitx´s wine industry was significantly impacted. However, a revival began in the late 20th century, as local winemakers embraced modern techniques while staying true to traditional practices. Today, the region is once again producing wines that are both globally competitive and a true reflection of Mallorca´s winemaking heritage.
  • Local Vineyards and Wineries: Felanitx is home to several notable wineries, like Bodegas Son Mayol, which is a very important winery in the region.
  • Wine Tourism: As interest in Mallorcan wines has grown, wine tourism has become an essential part of Felanitx´s economy. Tourists gather to experience not only the wines but also the beautiful landscapes, vineyards, and intimate tasting sessions.
