Our adventure begins at El Castillo and Las Monedas caves, both situated on a scenic hillside near the charming village of Puente Viesgo. Recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2008, these caves hold invaluable insights into early human history.
El Castillo Cave is one of Europe´s oldest archaeological sites, with evidence of human presence dating back over 150,000 years. This site has helped researchers trace an extensive cultural timeline of prehistoric development. Providing compelling evidence of potential interactions between Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens around 40,500 years ago. Inside, visitors can admire an astonishing collection of rock art, featuring handprints, bison, deer, horses, and mysterious symbols that continue to intrigue archaeologists.
Just 600 meters away, Las Monedas Cave offers another glimpse into the prehistoric past. The cave´s charcoal drawings, left behind by the last hunter-gatherer societies of the Cantabrian coast, depict animals such as reindeer, which roamed the area before disappearing around 12,000 years ago. Beyond its artistic significance, Las Monedas boasts breathtaking geological formations, including towering columns, colorful mineral deposits, stalactites, and stalagmites.
After exploring the caves, we will take a break for lunch in Santillana del Mar, a beautifully preserved medieval village located just 30 minutes from Puente Viesgo. Known for its cobbled streets and historic architecture, Santillana del Mar is considered one of Spain´s most picturesque towns. Its charming atmosphere provides the perfect setting to relax and enjoy the region´s traditional cuisine.
Our final stop takes us to the Altamira Museum, where we will visit the "Neocueva," a meticulous replica of the famous Altamira Cave. Since the original cave is closed to the public to preserve its delicate paintings, the museum offers an immersive experience, allowing visitors to appreciate the incredible artistry of early humans. The replica recreates the Hall of the Polychromes, showcasing stunning depictions of bison, horses, deer, goats, and symbolic markings some dating back as far as 36,000 years.
