You will see the statue of Jules Verne sitting on a gigantic squid, author of the science fiction french novel Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea. In one of the chapters of his book, he wrote about the great battle (Battle of Rande), sunken treasures, and the city of Vigo.
We will walk along the most picturesque streets of Vigo until we get to the beautiful Alameda da Praza Compostela the historic gardens of the city these botanical gardens are known as the stone zoo, here you can see sculptures of different animals like the hyena statue sculpted by José Medina all the statues are built of stone. After the lovely stroll around the park, we will continue our virtual adventure to the emblematic square of Praza Porta do Sol that connects the old quarter with the new part of Vigo where you will see as well the city's iconic statue of El Sireno (The Merman), built by the Galician sculptor Francisco Leiro, a modern sculpture made of aluminum and granite columns.
From Praza Porta do Sol we will make our way to explore the charming streets of the Casco Vello of Vigo (Vigo's Old Quarter). In the Praza da Constitucion, we will learn about the Reconquest of the city of Vigo the "Reconquista" that took place on March 28, 1809, when the brave Vigueses defeated Napoleon's troops and drove them out of the city! Vigo since then was considered the first city in Europe to expel Napoleon's army. Every year, the festival is held in the old town and continues late into the night, with a unique street atmosphere.
Then we will stop to admire the majestic 20th Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria de Vigo, it is a co-cathedral with the Tui Cathedral. Restored in neo-classical style after suffering various attacks being burned down by Francis Drake's soldiers in 1585 and demolished in 1813. Only the half tympanum of the original church has been conserved, it can be seen in the Museum of Pontevedra.
After that, we will go where everyone enjoys the tasty fresh oysters and seafood from the Bay of Vigo! The old stone fish market Mercado da Pedra and the Rua das Ostras (Oyster Street), where there are numerous seafood restaurants and the Oystermen and women where you can taste the raw, fresh oysters!
